Joint Inversion of Receiver Functions and Apparent Incidence Angles for Sparse Seismic Data

The estimation of crustal structure and thickness is essential in understanding the formation evolution terrestrial planets. Initial planetary missions with seismic instrumentation on board face additional challenge dealing activity levels that are only poorly constrained a priori. For example, lack plate tectonics Mars leads to low seismicity, which could, turn, hinder application many data analysis techniques. Here we propose using joint inversion receiver functions apparent incidence angles, contain information absolute S-wave velocities subsurface. Since function inversions suffer from velocity depth trade-off, addition exploit simple relation defines as observed P-wave angles constrain parameter space. We then use Neighborhood Algorithm for suitable objective function. resulting ensemble models used derive uncertainty estimates each model parameter. In preparation InSight mission, show our proposed method synthetics sparse sets different geological settings both single multiple events. information-theoretic statistical tests selection criteria discuss their relevance implications seismological framework.
